Ubhekani is a concept that personifies the act of calling out and reflecting back the viewer’s gaze. It asks: When you look, what are you really seeing? And what does your gaze reveal about you? It invites awareness of the fine details that shape what we consume, who we are and how we perceive others.

These mixed-media portrait extends the UBHEKANI narrative by exploring the unspoken emotions Black women carry , be it trauma, fear, and resilience. Through closed eyes and turned backs, these figures reflect on the burden of being seen but not understood. These works ask: What are we projecting onto those who do not face us? And what truths lie in what we choose not to see?
