Martine Margoles

About the artist

Martine Margoles graduated from Michaelis (UCT) in 1986. She had two solo shows at the Goodman Gallery and then moved to New York for the next seven years. While in New York she manufactured and sold her iconic Amos & Sophie T shirts, a brand she had established while still a student. She became a fashion designer and worked intensively in the garment district, making dresses for Patricia Field, and designing textiles for her own line in Reminiscence.

On her return to Johannesburg she established a commercial metal working studio studio to work with steel on a large scale. In 2004 she won a tender to make gates for the judge’s chamber at Constitution Hill. She also had a solo sculpture exhibition at Constitution Hill.

Martine has worked for the city of Johannesburg designing and making unique park equipment in Soweto, Spruitview, Lehae, and Thembisa.

She and her team of eight welders work mainly for architects, creating bespoke metal work for private homes and corporate clients.

Martine continues to show her work as well as to make functional objects beautiful which is her main obsession.
