Inile Hlongwane

Inile Hlongwane (b. 2007, Parktown, Johannesburg) is an 18-year emerging multi-disciplinary artist currently based in Roodepoort. Her work tackles the nuances of identity, memory, cultural relevance and stereotypes reflecting both her personal experiences and the community around her.

She began developing her artistic passion during high school where she participated in dramatic arts, directing and stage design before expanding into visual arts. She has since chosen to pursue the creative arts, continuing to independently develop her craft and body of work outside the academic space.

Hlongwane’s practice often examines personal and collective histories, with a particular interest in human behaviour and how it influences the way we interact with art, with each other and how we internalise our surroundings. She expresses these interests through materials such as wool, synthetic hair, wood, cement and fabric.

Her works have been showcased in the One Act Play Festival (2022), FEDA Festival (2023), a self-directed and written stage production titled "Medupi” (2024). She has further exhibited her artworks at the Crown and Thread Dual Exhibition curated by Khaya Magudulela (2025) ,as well as the Springs Art Gallery Exhibition (September 2025).

Hlongwane continues to explore storytelling and social commentary through visual and performance art under the project title Izilwane Ezintle aiming to engage with Johannesburg’s creative scene and contribute to South Africa’s evolving artistic narrative.
