Stone Light
I am fascinated by nature, filled with "ready-made" objects such as stone. Stones, and in
particular the Magaliesberg quartzite where my studio is situated, are of particular interest.
The relevance of these seemingly banal objects is that they are part of the earth where I grew up
(and still live with my family today) and predate the advent of complex lifeforms.
Quartzite also turns to sand over time, and silica-sand forms the basis of my material of choice,
glass.
The intricate, decorative cuts on the glass lampshade reference rhythmic tropes of my place of
birth, Africa. These cuts were also made using traditional sandstone tooling…
"Stone Light" can be described as a personal metaphor, using what the land gives you and to
shine bright.
