Artist Bio

Elzabe Malan, a South African artist with a BA in Fine Arts, has painted for many years, developing a distinctive style rooted in landscapes and portraiture. A turning point came in 2008 when she joined Andre Naudé’s studio, where her work gained new depth and direction. Her passion for landscapes reflects both real and imagined places, while her portraits capture emotional connections with loved ones. Exhibiting widely in Southern Africa, a 2016 Plettenberg Bay exhibition shaped her artistic voice. Inspired by Italian artist Mimmo Paladino, she embraced abstraction, creating evocative works that re-examine her enduring fascination with colour and form.

Artist Statement

Elzabe came across a collection distones that contemporary sculptor, Angus Taylor, was working on. The absolute beauty of the raw materials and the seamless creation of the artwork mesmerised her. All five stones now have pride of place at the entry to her home and each time she views them she sees something different. The feelings these beautiful works evoke made her wonder if she could capture how she sees them and so her series of works SET IN STONE developed.
Her paintings, up to now, explore the permanence of stone and how perception changes each time she looks at them.
Millions of years contained in a still form.
