This artwork shows that epilepsy is constantly with me, and that I cannot part from it. The physical health challenges of epilepsy are perhaps the most immediate and visible. Seizures, which can range from brief lapses in consciousness to severe convulsions, often lead to physical injuries such as bruises, cuts, or fractures. The aftermath of a seizure can be equally distressing, as individuals may experience a postictal state characterised by confusion, drowsiness, and extreme fatigue. This state can last for several hours, during which time individuals may struggle to perform basic daily tasks, including driving, cooking, or personal care. Furthermore, the side effects of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs), which are crucial for controlling seizures, can exacerbate physical challenges. Common side effects include dizziness, drowsiness, and gastrointestinal issues, all of which can hinder daily functioning and quality of life. Long-term use of AEDs may also lead to additional health complications, such as osteoporosis or liver damage, requiring ongoing medical management.
