"Hold Your Breath" is a visceral exploration of humanity’s reckless pursuit to manipulate and
dominate nature. Through this work, I confront the hubris of genetic engineering and the
catastrophic consequences of tampering with the delicate balance of the natural world. The
piece depicts a dystopian reality where a deadly flora, unleashed by human interference, spreads through airborne spores that colonise the lungs, symbolising the suffocating grip of our own destructive actions.
This artwork serves as a stark warning: our attempts to "enhance"; or control nature—be it through genetically modified organisms, climate manipulation, or other forms of interference—will inevitably lead to our downfall. The spores in this piece are not just a
biological threat; they are a metaphor for humanity’s toxic impact on Earth. We spread destruction, either by obliterating what is already perfect or by corrupting it through our arrogance.
"Hold Your Breath" is a call to reflect on our relationship with nature. It asks us to consider whether our relentless drive to control and alter the world around us is a path to progress or a road to ruin. In the end, the work suggests that our survival depends on humility, respect, and the recognition that nature, in its purest form, is not something to be conquered but something to be preserved.
