The Space Between

Artist statement – Nellien Brewer

Adam and Eve. The original love story set in paradise ending in disaster with the two main actors disobeying the rules for successful living; ejected into a life of toil, sweat and tears in the wilderness.

Fig Leaf consists of digital text printed on transparent plexiglass. Text following the precision of the intricate veins in a fig leaf. The image contains the entire books of Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes and Song of Solomon. Poetical language describing the blueprint for a disciplined life.

Drifting was inspired by the flotsam and jetsam tossed around in ocean waves - fragmented bits and pieces helplessly subjected to the river of life, unable to correct their course or influence their destiny.

The juxtaposition of these two works becomes an exploration of the chasm between the worlds created by choices and overlapping worldviews.
