Artist statement.
“BOSBERAAD”
As an artist, my work embodies a fusion of wildlife and humanity, expressed through the medium of sculpture using acrylic resin and paint. My recent series, inspired by the iconic Big Five of Africa, reflects my deep-seated admiration for these magnificent creatures while exploring themes of coexistence and the delicate balance of nature.
My artistic journey began with a vision of creating not just sculptures, but potential mascots or toys that resonate with viewers on a personal level. This quest was ignited after encountering AI generated imagery of lions on platforms like Pinterest, which propelled me to imagine the Big Five reimagined with human body representations, yet retaining their distinct animal characteristics.
The creation process was a meticulous one. Over the course of a year, I crafted wire structures and built the initial body forms using paper mache, ensuring that each piece was proportionally balanced as they all stand upon the same size plinth. The intricate details emerged in clay as I honed each sculpture, striving to capture the essence and spirit of these animals. Following this, I undertook the traditional processes of mould-making and casting, culminating in the vibrant paint finishes that bring my vision to life.
The inception of this series coincided with a pivotal moment during the annual Animal Ball in MMXXIII. In a whimsical yet profound gathering, representatives of the Big Five convened to deliberate the pressing issue of humanity's impact on our shared environment.
This narrative underpins my work, serving as a call to reflection and a reminder of our responsibilities towards the natural world.
Through my sculptures, I aim to spark conversations about wildlife conservation and the future of our planet - a tribute to the beauty of these creatures and a gentle nudge towards a more harmonious coexistence.
