Dr. Bongi Dhlomo-Mautloa

Dr. Bongiwe (Bongi) Dhlomo-Mautloa is a pioneering South African printmaker, curator, and activist, born in 1956 in Vryheid, KwaZulu-Natal. A graduate of the Rorke's Drift Art and Craft Centre, she became one of the first Black professional curators in South Africa. Her powerful linocuts and woodcuts have captured defining historical moments like the 1976 Soweto Uprising, as well as the daily struggles and resilience of Black women under apartheid. In recognition of her lifelong contribution to the arts, she was recently awarded the National Order of Ikhamanga (Silver) and an honorary Doctor of Arts and Design degree from Tshwane University of Technology (TUT).
