Vincent Osemwegie

Originally from Nigeria, Born in 1977, Vincent Osemwegie’s art journey began as early as childhood. Later he pursued this growing passion at the University of Benin, where he worked on honing his skills.

2009 marked Vincent’s arrival in South Africa, where he worked on his budding art career. Later, after an arduous journey, he stumbled on his new style of painting in 2013, embracing a more expressive technique. The technique best captures motion and emotion in an intuitive manner thus producing an entrancing effect on the canvas. Shifting from precise brush strokes—his canvases were teeming with fluidity that can only be impressive to perceive. The strokes of jerkiness came from the manipulation of paint that comprises of little to no contact with the canvas from a floating brush.

One of his most striking early works captures the grace Kitty Phetla, South Africa’s renowned ballet dancer. The work captures the motion and mesmerising performance of the ballet dancer: immortalizing her performance of the “The Dying Swan” at Amsterdam’s Royal Carre Theatre for the Faranani concert in honor of Nelson Mandela. Her drive and passion for her craft inspired Vincent’s series of ballerina paintings, whereby he emphasized the potential of small beginnings—a message often missed by young dreamers on the brink of their aspirations.

Vincent’s works have been featured in various national and international group exhibitions. Early exhibitions include shows at Lizamore & Associates in 2015/2016 and Eclectica Contemporary in Cape Town, leading to a solo exhibition in May 2018

Having an insatiable curiosity for uncharted media, Vincent’s journeying led him to paint on perspex, a bold choice that continues to expand the boundaries of his creative expression.
