Thomas Masingi

Thomas Masingi is a South African visual artist who was born and raised in Mokopane, in the Limpopo Province. He is currently based in Pretoria and his pursuing his Master's of Visual Arts at the University of South Africa. He is a multi-disciplinary artist working in a variety of media including but not limited to mixed media drawing, printmaking, photography, video art and other forms of digital art. His work mainly touches on issues of black masculinity, depression and anxiety. The most prominent themes touched on by his work include vulnerability, fragility, toxicity, psychological battles and the concept of the self and the shadow self. For this exhibition, Thomas Masingi's photographs look into how the internalisation of society's perception of us can bring out the monsters in all of us. We then become violent and then the people around suffer from our actions and reactions.
