Artist biography
Tamryn Dunkerley is a contemporary visual artist who blends traditional techniques with contemporary concepts. With a Honours degree of Fine Arts from the University of Johannesburg. She specializes in etching, mezzotints and other forms of print-making. Dunkerley's multi-layered prints depicting the visual elements of vacuum cleaners challenge the societal expectation of the female role in the household. She is known for her delicate details and haunting compositions and uses the process of printmaking as means to bring awareness to the problem of stereotypical expectation. Dunkerley challenges the societal expectations of women through the use of objects usually deemed or associated with femininity or the stereotypical ideas of the "female". Creating the idea of feminine associations with these objects while hiding the gender of the subjects depicted in her work, creating unsettling scenes to speak about the issues that she deems to challenge and bring awareness to.
