Arist Biography:

Retshidisitswe Ngqekeza Born on December 19th, Retshidisitswe Ngqekeza was raised in Lesotho due to parental challenges. At a very young age, his mother left him in Lesotho, where he spent his childhood immersed in the serene landscapes of Mohale's Hoek. It was during these formative years that his love for art began to blossom, inspired by the creativity of his father, a skilled sculptor. In 2014, his life took a signi icant turn when his mother fetched him from Lesotho to Qwaqwa, South Africa.Despite these changes, life was not without hardships. In 2018, Retshidisitswe faced a period of homelessness. However, through this challenging time, art remained his constant companion, a gift he irmly believes was given to him by God. Drawing and creating art became his lifeline, enabling him to survive by selling his work door-to-door. Even during moments of despair, including being rejected multiple times when applying to school, Retshidisitswe never lost his passion for drawing.In 2021, after receiving his legal documentation, Retshidisitswe experienced a life changing moment when he connected with Teboho Makwatsa through Facebook. Teboho expressed his admiration for Retshidisitswe’s work and his desire to mentor him and reine his skills. This opportunity reignited hope in Retshidisitswe, proving that perseverance and faith could open new doors, even after years of challenges and self doubt. Retshidisitswe specializes in mixed media, using charcoal, acrylic, and collage to create unframed masterpieces that honor the beauty and strength of his Sotho heritage. His works explore themes of identity, community, and love, with standout pieces such as "Phefumoloho ea Lerato" (Breath of Love), "Mokhabo oa Matla" (Essence of Strength), and "Menyaka ea Litilatila" (Joys of Innocence) showcasing his emotive storytelling.Over the years, Retshidisitswe has participated in numerous exhibitions and events, including:- 2018 Kaofela Kaofela Qwaqwa Festival- 2020 Department of Arts and Culture Exhibition- 2023 "Lie Back and I Will Hold You" Exhibition at August House- 2024 Capital Art Fair in Tshwane- 2024 Smile Foundation Auction at Ten Bompas Hotel, where his artwork "Moetapele" was sold. Currently, he collaborates with esteemed organizations such as the Creative Block Programme by Spier Arts Trust and manages projects with @blackmabutho. Retshidisitswe’s works are sought after for exhibitions and consignments both locally in South Africa and internationally, including in the UK.Driven by a mission to inspire others, Retshidisitswe’s art relects his love for people, faith, and culture. His story is a testament to the transformative power of perseverance and creative expression.
