Minien Hattingh

Minien is a South African fine artist holding a BA Fine Arts (Hons) degree from the University of Pretoria. Her predominant mediums of choice include performative photography, installation, drawing and mixed media. Her work explores the otherwordly and unusual, ranging from spirituality, social consciousness, humour entwined with an innocence. In the art-making process, she trusts her gut, it's neither as pragmatic as the brain, nor as romanticised as the heart. The intention of her work is to emotionally capture the audience, to make them feel something, exploring subjects that are often taboo or overlooked. Her artistic development usually stems from a tactile experience. Art and music have interchangeably always been one of the constants in her life. She responds intuitively to materials, if there’s something around her, be it in her immediate environment that captivates her, she’ll use it as a source of inspiration.

Defining moments in her career comprise of three solo exhibitions, National art competition Sasol New Signatures Top 100 (2014, 2015 ,2017) winning the Thami Mnyele Fine Arts Merit award for Multi and New Media (Ekurhuleni, South Africa, 2015) as well as, winning Second prize in the Young Talents category of the La Quatrième Image photography competition (Paris, France 2017). She has taken part in numerous group exhibitions to date.
