Pretoria based artist Helena Hugo's paintings and drawings, executed in a detailed expressive manner will depict South African labourers in her exhibition entitled SA@Work. In treating the people who are often being taken for granted with virtuous formality, Hugo presents them as individuals with reconsidered status and importance. She transcends conventional notions of realism not so much because of her technical ability, but because her drawings of people somehow capture the essence of each particular subject.
