Ditiro Mashigo is a South African artist, textile and fashion designer. Her work explores African aesthetics, memory, spirituality, cosmology and womanhood through fiber, painting, printing, and tactile sculpture. She is the founder of the fashion label Serati and an alumna of Design Indaba. She has an impressive educational background. She holds a Diploma in Fashion and Textile Design and an Advanced Diploma in Fine and Applied Arts. Recently, she completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Fine and Studio Arts, specializing in fiber art, at the Tshwane University of Technology.
Her work lies at the intersection of art, fashion, and the critical analysis of African aesthetics. “My artistic expression is deeply rooted in gratitude and spirituality, guiding my creative journey. Each piece reflects my connection to faith, memory, and lineage. Through techniques like mono printing on paper and screen printing on canvas and raw silk, I channel intuitive imagery. I also use materials like plastic tubing, twine, and rope to create tactile textures, honoring womanhood in Southern Africa.”
In 2014, she founded her fashion and textile brand, Serati, renowned for high-craft designs. Mashigo is also a Design Indaba alumna and curator for the emerging creative festival class of 2022. She designed performance uniforms for the Soweto Gospel Choir and has collaborated with MRP Home. Additionally, she worked as a researcher at Miss Simone Art consultancy and collaborated with brands like Something Good Studio. In 2022/23, she was awarded a grant for the Sustainable Together Collaboration by the Goethe-Institut, British Council, and Twyg. Mashigo was part of a dual exhibition following the Art After Baby initiative at Keyes Art Mile in Johannesburg in November 2023. In 2024, she received the STILL Art residency at the Ellis House Artist Building in Johannesburg’s CBD.
Born in 1990 in Lebowakgomo, Mashigo now divides her time between Limpopo and Johannesburg.
